LIBERTAD PERDIDA

are from Panama, thanks a lot to Anthony from Riot & Dance zine in France who asked the questions.....

Firstly, a short presentation of the band for the people who donít know Libertad Perdida.

Weíre a melodic-posicore band that have been trying to give positive attitude to anyone who wants to. We have been playing since 1993 and after a lot of lineup changes, problems and lots of effort the band is today: Psyko (voice), Josie (bass), Juan Carlos (guitar), Tofio (drums), and Chris (guitar).

Whatís the reaction of the public when you explain the meaning of the lyrics and attitude of the band?

Well, thereís a good response from the public, weíre trying to say something... maybe some others give a shit about it but weíre not worry about them, someday theyíll listen carefully.

Is there a SxE fashion in Panama? What do you think of the hardline movement?

Here the hardline movement is very small, and the ones who are in it are really involved, not for being cool people or being fashion. About the movement, itís something that helps people find themselves in a very deep way.

Tell me about your ex-zine and new newsletter?

I made a zine called Sociedad Mediocre, I put out three issues, but for some reasons ($$$) I decided to quit. Then, last year I began t make the Principios De Conciencia newsletter, and it goes well in the present days

Which bands are you really into? Do you remember the first punk record/tape you bought?

Well, the bands I like most are : 7 SECONDS, DESCENDENTS, BAD RELIGION, MINOR THREAT, RAMONES etc. The first tape that reached my hands was the DEAD KENNEDYS Bedtime For Democracy, really good record and really good band.

Do you intend to play soon again in Costa Rica? Have you got many contacts outside Panama?

We are trying to arrange things but we have to wait the best time to go, we hope to go soon, and people wants to see us. We are getting a lot of contacts, specially from South America, weíre spreading really good in Europe, and we hope to do the same in Asia.

Tell me what you think of these bands: LOPODRIDO (Puerto Rico), REVOLUCION X (Mexico), DEAD KENNEDYS, YOUTH OF TODAY, SHELTER.

About Lopodrido and Revolucion X, Iíd love to hear those bands to give an opinion, about the Kennedys, itís an excellent band musically and lyrically, about YOT and Shelter, theyíre good bands, maybe Shelter are more commerical oriented, but I think itís stil a HC band.

A few words on the political/economical/social situation in Panama.

Right now, weíve been living a lot of violence... thereís so much killing, suicides, robberys.. little kids with drugs and guns, poverty is increasing because our government is selling all the public services to big corporations and they are leaving workers on the street, the president wants to run for re-election and politicians keep lying: the only thing that comfort people in some way is that weíre close to get the Panama Canal for our own, the US troops are leaving at last. There are some movements that fight for our rights, but divided theyíre not gonna get through.

The pope Jean Paul II came to visit Cuba a few days back. What do you think of the prescence if this old shark on a communist territory?

Well, I think that this visit was some kind of pressure for Castro, but he made things well, if the Pope wants to visit Cuba, OK, but let him try to put people against communism, no. Tolerance was the best (and still is) the basis of Cubaís socialism still strong.

Do you militate for any ecological/political collectives or parties?

As a band, we support some movements, and we try to give our help in the same way as we can, we donít participate in political movements, we focus in individualís change and freedom.

Panamean scene is rather small.. Is it an exclusive urban scene or can you find bands (or play) in the country and small villages?

In the beginning, there was just a movement in the capital. Right now the movement is stronger and we have scenes in places like Chorrera, Chitre, Santiago, Colon and so on. A lot of these bands from the provinces are playing here and vice versa, itís a good advance.

Is it easy to find good stuff in your country? (Tapes, zines...). Stores or mailorder?

I think is easy find records in stores, and shirts and things. We hope that someday we gonna find really good underground music.

Whatís the last film you have seen and enjoyed most?

Well, thereís some pictures that interest me, but I hope in some future will have the opportunity of see Ďem.

Do you think music (punk/hardcore) is a way to wake up peopleís mind like cinema or literature? According to you, whatís the period when punk rock was the most positive and constructive, 1977 or 1997 ?

I think music right now is a good way to spread a message, the most we are sincere with our ideas and aims for a change, the most we wanna give people a chance to evolve and live better. I think music itís a better way than reading, because you can directly explain your point of view and then they can understand you by your words, maybe reading you can get the ideas, but when you got a doubt?I think that progressively the movement has grown from their beginnings. I think that right now we are more motivated in built our own path and itís good. Now people are looking for bands who wants to say something and the bands are willing to.

Last words for you Fernando.

Thanks for the chance of appearing in your zine, hope you like it. If anyone wants to write, please do it. Our first tape is available for $5 US, itís re-edited. Letís start to make a change in our lives and our souls and look for a bright future. Peace!

PIZDA MATERNA (interview by D-Fekt)

I'm sure if both myself and Matjaz Lican of Atomic Fart were ever to sort out access to the Internet and E-mail we'd be in serious debt with the phone people by now, but not having that luxury this interview was in good old fashioned and not so hip posted letter form, anyway in true pen pal tradition we have traded many tapes/records etc. etc and one certain recording was of PIZDA MATERNA his partner lea who is one part of this duel male/femail vocalised {screams rants and raves} crazy hardcore Slovenija Punk/Metal political band, and I knew that readers of Ripping Thrash Zine would love to hear about them. (of course if you don't want to send all the way to Slovenija you can get a studio recording by sending a tape and S.A.E. to the Dee Fekt address) but anybody who is interested in Pizda Materna records and some of the best quality live tapes I've ever heard of some of your favourite crusty punk bands from around the world then Matjaz Lican is your man(See Reviews)OK onto the interview. answers by Lea.

Q1..TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT SLOVENIJA, IT'S PUNK HISTORY, AND WHY YOU HAVE COME INVOLVED IN THIS CULTURE?.

The Punk Rock in Slovenija started soon after the first Punk rock wave in England, first bands were formed in 1977 in Ljubljana 'Beograd, Zagreb (we were still Yugoslavia-remember??) and were musically a copy of the early UK bands but the lyrics were dealing mainly with local troubles and topics and were quite hard for the community/socialist public moral and society so many bands and Punks had allot of troubles, people thought they were nazis and similar shit. At the beginning of the 80's the scene was really strong with many bands/zines/venues - it was really great, a lot of touring bands came across the country, then in a few years everything has gone(or almost), many bands changed the music style, people just disappeared from the scene, some of them got into the music business.... In the past few years the scene is growing again but like always for many it is just a fashion or a way to have fun, still there are some people and bands that fight and work for the true d.i.y punk. I became involved just by chance as I met some people in a pub where i used to go after school ( when I was 15 ) they were older than I was they were going to gigs and parties so I joined them as I liked it. I started to be more involved when I met my Actual boyfriend and some of my friends. he was booking gigs (and we were going around to every gig in the area)some of the bands were really kind to us and took us with them in their vans across Europeso I met more punx and talked to them and here I am now.

Q2..IT'S BEEN SAID THAT MOST PUNKS ETC ONLY LAST TILL THEY ARE 25 YEARS OLD THEN DIE INTO NORMALITY. WHY DO YOU THINK THIS IS??

I'm not sure why it is like this but I think mostly because they get into punk for fun & fashion and once you finish the school (University) then you need to find a job and of course you have to change your image, so you simply change to fit into a ..normal person to be accepted from the society(friends/family) but luckily some of us/them are strong enough to survive with all the shit we get from all around and my parents realised that I am happy as I am and they love me for what I am.

Q3..TATTOOS AND PIERCING ARE FROWNED UPON HERE IN THE UK - WHAT REACTION DO YOU GET IN SLOVENIJA... I KNOW YOU DO PIERCINGS , HOW'S THAT COMING ALONG ??

Well I started doing piercing about five years ago. In that time I was the first that started with it and SASO (the other Pizda Materna member ) was one of the first to do tattoos, it was hard because it was something new here and people were afraid and disgusted so it was almost impossible to find a job with piercings on your face- and even kids at school had troubles.

But since two years it's a big fashion ( thanx to the rave culture+ Prodigy) and people are more tolerant now as well, like every new thing it needs time to get accepted by the larger "audience" of course it still makes a difference if you have a single piercing or a small tattoo (this is fashion) but soon as you have more of them then your a primitive, dirty,a drug dealer... BLOODY PREJUDICES........

Q4..THE BAND GET A LOT OF FLACK FOR HAVING AND TAKING A POLITICAL STANCE- WHY IS THIS AND DO YOU THINK A LOT OF PEOPLE JUST WANT DISPOSABLE PUNK/H.C. TO PRETEND TO REBEL AT..A M.T.V. PRETEND SUBCULTURE??

Pizda Materna means "Mother's Cunt" but here us used as a way of expression like 'what the fuck!' or 'Jesus christ'in sexist it's a provocation and it works because even the "Liberal" Punx sometimes are afraid to put the full name on posters they put P.M. only, our lyrics are short political but sometimes written in a different way, so we have to explain many times at gigs the meaning of the songs.

Well like I said before Punx are Punx and they like to drink and have fun so some get bored from what they want to say and they start to complain or provocative with shit like;"Kill,Kill,Kill the animals!" or "Flesh is law", it even happened that some one jumped on the stage and asked why we were Anti-Police, I think you don't need a big brain to know they are fucking bastards, many times they come into our gigs and we don't want them there so we protest and we aren't afraid to voice our fucking opinion, we fucking hate them, they are stupid arrogant scum.!!!!! the other songs are about Religion , Animal suffering, against hard drug abuse, borders....for me the music is a way of communication and to share ideas with other people if there is someone with a different opinion based on facts then - OK i can understand and have respect but on the other hand I can't tolerate all the bullshit we get from the audience, for example none will convince me that drug dealers are good and that we should let them do their 'job' at gigs, that is stupid!!! you can't sing about peace, freedom and a better world and then buy the cocaine or heroine from the bastards who are exploiting the poor people & make a profit from the death. if your not strong enough to face reality and you need this shit to feel better then probably suicide would be the best solution at least you don't have so many victims on your conscience.

Q5..SO WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM WITH THE SPLIT 7" WITH BRIGADE O.D. HAS THE BAND RECTIFIED THIS PROBLEM AND WILL YOU BE VENTURING INTO VINYL/C.D. LAND AGAIN AFTER ALL THESE PROBLEMS??

The problem with the split 7" P.M./Brigade OD is that when we got the vinyl's back from the Czech pressing plant there was some unexplainable noise on both sides of the record the Dat was OK so we think it was their mistake. The company here which we do the records said that they were right but the Czech insists that everything is OK so till now we haven't solved anything, yet (since April 99) I need to say that the first 7" was pressed on 12" size (again their fault) so we had to modify the sleeve for sure we are not gonna work with them anymore so the future releases will be probably done in Italy or Germany.

Q6..IS THERE ANY HOPE FOR THE WORKING CLASS, WHAT WITH THE *NEW ELITE OF THE RICH USING THEIR POWER TO KEEP THE UNDERCLASS AT BAY WITH EMPLOYMENT WAGE CLAUSES AND THEIR OWN POLICE + PRIVATE FRENCED OFF COMMUNES. IS THIS A NEW US AND THEM OR JUST THE SAME OLD DOG EAT DOG HUMAN GREED *(I.E. old money as opposed to new self millionaires)

Huh, that's a hard one..In this country there's such a chaos all around they say that we must join the E.C. so we need to have European prices for everything , but wages are low which is a stupid paradox an approximate wage is 350 quid per month but if you work in a factory you can get around 150-200 quid, if you work in a shop or a pub 250-300 quid but if you sit in parliament or if you are a manager you can get more than 1000 quid.

the essential food costs like everywhere in Europe or much more the petrol is abit cheaper, if you want to but a house it can cost from 700-1000 a square meter. we pay a rent for our flat £130 every month (no phone/heating) + around £40 for the bills (Water/Electricity) and my boyfriend earns £300 working in a hell of a job in a ware house (I an relate to that one DeeFekt)

The employment is around 13 % and there's almost no social money , if your lucky enough you get £50 per month but not for more than 3 months in a row(where I live only in winter)..you almost have no rights at your job, the unions are just a scenery they don't help you very much. they can't give you the wage for a few months and if you quit your it is your own fault and you don't get any benefits, there is some kind of help for very poor families but it is a spit in the ocean they really make you feel like Shiite.

The new rich elite is getting richer on out backs and they use their connections + friendships for more profit and dirty business. you can see new cars and houses all around and you just wonder how do they get all this money (for sure not with their wages) same old story !.

Q7..DO YOU MANY PROBLEMS WITH PEOPLE OVER INDULGING WITH DRUGS AND ALCOHOL, CAUSING PROBLEMS AT GIGS??

There's always someone who is turning up my nerves I hate drunk kids making problems at the gigs and I hate violent drunk people in general . I think that drinking for having fun is cool sometimes but not drinking for making troubles trying to show others how strong you are or when they drink because they have problems and they are not strong enough to fight the problems but drunk enough to fight with other people, I don't think that alcohol and drugs are the only way to communicate and be part of a group, being stoned to death everyday is just a big problem that you have with yourself.

You can't fight for a better life if your drunk & too stoned, I think that this kind of people are not coming to gigs for the music or the ideology and to do some activities but only because they are bored.

Q8..SO WHAT IS CURRENTLY ON THE BANDS TURNTABLES/DECKS? WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE NEXT BIG TREND FOR THE KIDS TO EAT UP(YOU'VE HAD YOUR M.T.V. POP-PUNK/COMMERCIAL HIP HOP & RAP WATERED DOWN HEAVY METAL/TOUGH GUY HARD-CORE, WHAT CANDY WILL THE CORPORATE CHURN OUT NEXT??

In the band we are into different kinds of music, that also the reason that it is hard to do new stuff, we have different opinions of what we want to play. Pizda Materna is also doing a kind of performance on the stage to maximise the energy.

I like various stuff: Cr@ss/Icons of flith/Rudimentry Peni/Dirt/Toxic waste/Subhumans/and also the Amebix/Axe Grinder/Cress/Nausea/Police Bastard/ ... when I need something to relax or when I pierce I like to hear some Indian or African tribal stuff or folk music (Modern). For the others I can say that the singer and bass player are more or less into the same stuff the guitarist likes rage or more commercial stuff, the drummer American hard-core, the terminst electronical stuff ambient, drum 'n' bass , I don't know for the other terminist-probably the same , we don't spend a lot of time together as we live in different places and we don't talk allot about our private life, I don't think that anyone has the time to follow M.T.V I think its also too boring and a waste of time.

Q9..WHY IS D.I.Y SO IMPORTANT TO YOU WOULDN'T IT BE EASY JUST TO ALLOW SOME RECORD COMPANY TO DO IT FOR YOU??.

D.I.Y is very important cause you have the control on what you're doing. it might be easier to have a company to do it all for you, but they tell you how to play and what to say...so you become just a product. and it's much more fun to do it by yourself. it's a way to spend your time On what you like to do.

Q10..IS PUNK/HARDCORE JUST ANOTHER SMALL PETTY SOCIETY WITH IT'S ARSEHOLES, POWER MONGERS AND SEA OF EGOS (this includes Musicians +Scensters etc.) DON'T YOU EVER THINK FUCK IT AND WANT A NORMAL LIFE??

I think I have a normal life- at least for me is normal, I do what I think is important and good besides punk + gigs I like to spend my time going around the countryside with friends, going to the sea to swim, riding around with the bike or spend the evening doing Aerobic & Fitness (that's my drug -I like to feel how alive I am) I believe it makes me happy.

I'm into the band to have fun and communicate, to tell my point of view to the others and not because I'm bored, I do believe in what I say and do.

I can't say what punk/hc really is sometimes is the best thing and the other time I can get really disappointed with it, I think it is what you make out of it, how you live and understand it and what good you can take out of it like everything there are good and bad sides of punk/h.c too! I think the most important is to be happy with what you do- to be yourself, you must live every moment of your life as a special moment, you have to make it special because your the only one who can.

Don't let anyone to control or influence your decisions, punks is to be yourself with respect for others around you. it's about freedom and equality sometimes punk has too many rules so don't follow them if you don't like them, they can be the same oppressive rules that society is forcing you to follow.

Q11..RIGHT FINALLY GIVE US AN IDEA OF WHAT PIZDA MATERNA PLAN FOR THE FUTURE??

I have no idea what we are gonna do in the future, I hope we will still play together, we're all living in different towns so we usually see each other at gigs or rare rehearsals, we will definitely release the split 7" with Bridage OD from Macedonia one way or another.

We would like to tour but for now it's impossible-perhaps in the next millennium, and maybe we will meet Jesus and he will join the band as best drummer ever... then he will die for drug + alcohol abuse, and then the aliens will come and we will tour the space and make another 7" with the space cowboys and some one from the Czech pressing plant will work in the pressing plant on Jupiter so the record will be fucked up again.

Jesus (my father from Mexico) will resurrect again and kill them all with his new cyber cock and the president of the U.S.A will ask us to play at the White House - and we will paint it black & Satan will come to save us...as a new drummer (we change them often) but that's a new long story well thanks for showing interest in Pizda Materna and thanks for the interview...for the Japanese version of this interview please contact our new drummer in Tokyo bye and take care...LEA

WARSORE

WARSORE is an aussie grind/mangel band who hopely will blast thro Europe in September 2000. So, time for interview!

Two years ago, J-P asked questions and Paul answered..

On lyrical side, Warsore can be described as 'socially aware' band, why? Wouldn't be easier to sing about more popular gore/splatter/death grind? Why grindcore is nowadays more and more labeled/linked to moronic/sexist/homophobic bullshit, rather than to "political" side what early N.D., Fear of God, Agx etc were?

PAUL: Splatter/gore/death are ok to listen to but I can't write about those subjects because it's boring, and communicating with people about what you see around you, to me is more productive

The scene has been invaded with macho morons like Robert Deathrage who try to fuck people over by being this macho sex driven, violent loser with a gutless attack on people who don't have the write of reply. But there is a lot of positive grind out there who are trying to communicate a message. Bands like Carcass Grinder, Pršparation-H, Unholy Grave, Violent headache etc.

How's the race relations in Australia? If i remember right it was on the 80's when your government left behind the "White Australia" immigration policy? And after that there has been more and more immigration from Asia? Any hope for the aboriginals? Or are they doomed to extinction as the white culture destroys their own culture & hence their identity?

PAUL: At the moment race relations are strained due to a political movement of middle aged white bastards called "One Nation" who want to reclaim the "old days" of the 1930's and 40's (J-P: great depression & war... good old days..) They don't see Australia as part of Asia, which we are, and they only see the future on terms of success for white families who play by the rules. White Australia policy ended in the 1950's but if you look deeper it's still in process, just no one is told about it.

But how's the things in late 99/early 00? Answers again by Paul, Questions by J-P

For some reason I have got this impression that Warsore has some Vietnam affliction...? Why/why not? I assume that you are more or less in mid 20's, so did your fathers served in the Vietnam as Australia used to supply some troops to Vietnam on 1967-72 ???

PAUL: WARSORE don't have an affliction with Vietnam, although their food is awesome. We sometimes may use images from the war, because it was a bullshit war for any country to be in. None of our fathers went to Vietnam, they were smart!

Australia is mostly famous (in musical field) about so called War Metal bands like Destroyer 666, Sadistik Execution, Bestial Warlust etc. How you see War/Black metal bands & scenes as in many countries grindcore is mostly associated with metal scenes/attitudes?

PAUL: Most of the bands (black) have split up due to their destructive attitudes and views. In Malaysia we played Penang metal festival with a black metal act called Hail, they were only young people following a certain look and fashion. They had no idea why they looked the way they did. Blackmetal for me is like christian music. They all sing about their god and what he/she does.

How's the gigs (grind & others) at Melbourne & Australia, as grindcore is usually a genre so small that it can't have gigs etc of it's own, but grind bands play at punk/metal/etc gigs, so how's the situation in Australia? Have you played often outside the Melbourne's main area (as the distances are quite infernal down there)? How expensive is to travel at Australia, has the punk/grind/etc bands touring there mostly ended up in debts or has there been any bigger success?

PAUL: The Melbourne scene is quite healthy at the moment. Many people have got up off their collective asses and formed bands. The grind scene in Australia can support it's own gigs, no problems. Warsore have played in Sydney + Adelade, Singapore & Malaysia. We are planning to go to Japan this year. It's not expensive to travel in Australia. To fly to Sydney from Melbourne is $209, to catch a bus it's $56, to drive it's nothing. (come to Finland and taste what is european most expensive gasoline... can't say that driving a car is inexpensive! J-P) Most bands that tour in or outside Australia have bigger success because people hear them.

Rabbits are nice & cute little animals, but in Australia there were quite harmful some decades ago, so how's the situation now? What you think about the animal rights movement versus animal's protection movement questions as at least here in Finland, they are in quarrelling over the methods & the end results..? Are you vegan/vegetarian/carnivores?

PAUL: Rabbits are still a problem here in Australia as they tend to erode the natural environment. They are an introduced species and compete with native wildlife for food and space. They end up winning because they multiply so easily. Animal rights is an important movement that needs to be taken more seriously. There needs to be a balance between rights and protection. We need to ask "how far do we go before you go too far and realize that a mistake was made" We need to weigh up the rights of all animals with the need to protect the environment and nature wildlife. I am the only vegetarian in the band.

"Fucked up attitudes, but music rocks" So how important are lyrics to you? Your 10" didn't included any lyrics.. Why? Are you picky with record offers, or "as long as you get em out, you are ok"? Have you ever bought/traded a record that you have shamed afterwards (due to lyrical/ideological contest)? Have ever played a gig with bands which have left you wondering "what a fuck we are playing with these.."?

PAUL: Lyrics are always important, because that's your foundation, your message. There is really no message in the music, only anger, which is why we play fast. Our 10" didn't included lyrics because of space and demand by the label that this is what we stick to. Sorry! Warsore are very picky with offers. We like to hear the band if going to be a split ep/lp, we like to know the person behind the label and we like to make sure we get a fair deal. I haven't traded/bought a record that i was ashamed of not yet. As i said in Penang we played with a black metal band, they left me wondering what were they all about!

Stoner rock seems to be quite popular at Australia.. So what kind of relationship Warsore shares with a) alcohol b) hemp c) tobacco d) good homemade brew e) bad homemade brew f) rock bands like Bloodduster ?

PAUL: Unfortunately Stoner rock is popular. Australia seems to be behind the rest of the world. We have some really fucked up stoner bands that are so fucken boring it's ridiculous!! Warsore shares no relationship to alcohol at all. Me, drummer, the singer don't touch alcohol, the bass player may drink once in a while. B) We really don't touch hemp, only two members participate in it's pleasures. C) Only our bass player smokes D & E) see answers for q A F) We don't have anything to do with this really shitty 60's rock band. They are absolute crap!! We never have played a gig with them or ever will, they suck! I can see Blooduster becoming a 60's cover band, performing at aged people's homes and weddings. That's the way they are heading. They think that they are being cool and clever. They make us laugh a lot!

How the Australia sees itself in politically when it speaks about SE Asia & Polynesia etc? After all, Australia is economically 'superior' to any of the states around (apart from Taiwan maybe).. Does there still exist some "Australian Holy Destiny" attitude like the american's "Manifest Destiny" one?

PAUL: Australia still believes itself to be economic and military superior to a lot of the countries around us. Australia likes this attitude because it gives them a sense of might. They want to feel like american's. And this way they can. We are the little America of the Pacific.

I know that you lads are quite nihilistic, but are you active with it, do you try to 'justify' the 'bollox to all' attitude, or do you prefer "Fuck it all!" as most proper answer to all questions..??

PAUL: We are not that nihilistic, we are active with the "Fuck It All" attitude. We find a balance between sanity and insanity. In the middle is Warsore.

I think that living in Australia and being isolated from a lot of people allows us to have this attitude.

What's the story behind the song transitcops..? Any encounters with police department? Ever dreamed of having sex with policewomen (or men)?

PAUL: I wrote this song because I was sick of being manipulated by transit police for tickets, and constantly asked where I was going + what I was doing. These bastards are just pseudo police with dangerous powers and they know it. My worst experience was having five policemen point their guns at my head in a raid on an anarchist bookstore 4 yrs ago. I would never sleep, talk to or look at the enemy. Once the robot of the state, i want nothing to do with them.

Has there been any public debate over the Australian military help to Papua New Guineas military when they try to crush the rebels of the Bogainville island? How's the Australian role in the Pacific area, as you are the leading economic force in the area and hence can give aid to those small island states & hence force them to suck all the rules what the government want's impose to them? Does the press give any coverage to actions what happens in French Kaledonia or in Indonesia?

PAUL; The Australian government will let you see and hear only what they want you to see. Not many Australian citizens know Boganville even exists, let alone know that Australia supplies military aid to crush the rebels. Australia is very powerful in the Asia-Pacific area, economically and military. We are a country who wants to dominate, but finds it hard doing so. At the moment Australia are scared of Indonesia, because they have a strong military and are very close to the Australian mainland. But to me it's all chess games, fucking nothing with our live yet again.

Are humans as a society rational? Do you give any value to 'wicca/worship mother earth' type religious cults (even thou they are masked as 'rational back to the basics' lifestyles) ??

PAUL: Humans are not at all rational beings. We may posses the brain capacity to be rational but we rarely use it wisely. To look at human history and the plans for the future tells us rationality was rarely used to determine who we are today. We are still trying to define ourselves as a species even today. The decisions our species make are nearly always mistakes. We are constantly learning from our mistakes, this to a certain extent does not define the use of a rational mind. All religions, wicca or otherwise are not rational on their logic or explanation of their activities.

How you "value" society, what are your 'backups' to your thoughts on the society/world?

PAUL: I don't value or society much at all. What is there to value? Exploitation? War? Abuse? Poverty? Military Bullshit? There is a long list of reasons 'no value' is placed on our society. The steady decline of capitalism and it's cannibalizing everyone is a nice recipe for revolution and civil war. The advent of more bullshit technology that serves no purpose to our already boring lives. The billions of dollars Bill gates has. Why? What is it he can do with this money? (According to latest news, he may well use it in the american justice system, in order to keep his microrate emporium alive as a one piece,J-P)

Australian life in general, what kind of day routines you have?

PAUL: Well, we all work so it's up at 7.00 Am, work till 3 or 4 and go home, answer mail, rehearse on weekends and also record. That's it so far.

How's the day to day politics, could you explain at what level you can take part to politics through voting. How's the Australian political life is structured, are the parties/politicians nationwide or are they just 'statewide' activists. What kind of relationship is between the Capital Canberra and the rest of the states, as Australia is a union of states??

PAUL: The only way to take part in the political process is to either shot one of the bastard politicians or drive a tank through parliament. Or you could vote when you turn 18 yrs but we all know who ever you vote for, a politician still wins. Canberra + the states always fight over money + power. It's a rough one as egos are involved.

The debate & referendum over the republic versus monarchy in Australia is now over. Has anything changed?

PAUL: The republic debate is all shit. We end up with the same shit only it is packaged differently. Nothing has changed at all. If we did change the head of state to a republic it would have made no difference at all, we would still have the same arseholes in power and the same police beating our faces in with their clubs. Things don't change, they just get worse or harder for us!!

How's the situation for Helen Hanson and her party as there was some Scandal lately???

PAUL: Well the party she did lead has broken up and disbanded. She won't return, she is finally dead. The party collapsed after the last election. She was involved with a money scandal which fucked her up!

I quess that you can find lots of bad from Australia, but what's the good sides of living in Australia/Melbourne?

PAUL: The standard of living is quite high, that would be the only thing.

How much you trust to other people in the scene (australia & worldwide)? i.e. if there person from other part of the world writing that he wants to release a 7"EP for you, do you hurry to write back with "YES!!!!" or does it take some time before answering anything. And some person writes from other side of the planet that he's coming to Australia and needs a place to crash... ???

PAUL: You have to trust people or you don't get anywhere. Because we are so isolated here, trust is the only thing we have. Warsore don't hurry back with a "yes" response. We talk it over and look at the label, how much material we have, new stuff, old stuff, etc. One thing I pride myself is a quick response to all mail. I try to answer every piece of mail and to give people what they are for. If a person wants to crash at my house, no problems as long as he/she is not a fucked up fascist or drug user and pulls their weight (not lazy)

Euro tour 98, what happened to it ??? And how's the 'Conquer The Singapore' tour?

PAUL: Well, i suggest people speak to Sven from Yellow Dog records in Berlin, because he knows and he hasn't contacted us for 1 year to tell why it didn't happen. We do feel ripped off. The Singapore/Malaysian tour was fucken awesome. We toured with DEMISOR. We played 5 gigs, 3 in Singapore and 2 in Malaysia. We meet some great people, played with some fantastic bands and played through some shitty amps. We had the best time. The guys from Demisor were great, they were the perfect hosts, cheers! We are doing a live split ep with DEMISOR for an swedish label.

Is it nowadays hard to come with "cool","original","nice" &"super" covers for records as it seems that all splat/gore/burned/bombed/slashed/crushed pics has lost their shock value ??

PAUL: It is hard, and at times unoriginal. Warsore try to match up the cover with the ep's theme or title. We have chosen at times to go with jap animation or animation in general to keep a balance.

End of the millenium.. How's you gonna spend the turn of the millenium?

PAUL: I will spend the turn of the millenium in japan at some grind/hardcore gig!

How you see the international "tape scene", I think that there is not enough 'self regulation' among the bands/labels/distros when it comes to quality.. Your thoughts?

PAUL: The tape scene is ok, although i do agree with your point on quality. There are some tapes which sound like absolute shit. We should always try to make good quality stuff so we can undermine the mainstream music stores.

I'm coming from countryside and hence i'm sort of familiar with the being alone aspects. But being alone in cities which are full of people.. Is loneliness the biggest problem of the modern time?

PAUL: Loneliness along with harsh socio-economic times is causes many younger people to commit suicides. We live in a world that tries to isolate you from everyone else. So in effect we are always scared of each other and each others thoughts. Loneliness is a major problem, but i think capitalism and technology which is unproductive as the major problem of the modern times.

Big stadium rock acts keep up artificial 'demand' by just doing limited number of tours. Warsore does one tour per year outside Australia. Are you rockstars?:)

PAUL: Firstly we are not the only grind band to do this. If you never play overseas and only in your city, you will die a musical death rather fast. We have seen this with other bands in Australia. Warsore work hard at recording, writing mail, playing shows, so one tour per years id not that much, besides Australia is a shit place for grind. When we fly around in our own private jet and have Phil Collins support us and I can afford to give up my job, then we can be called rockstars.

There has been several big forest fires in Australia during the years.(or atleast we have learned that from the news..) Has these fires lead to any growing number of ecological awareness, or is it treated more like "shit happens, who cares"???

PAUL: Australia has had some harsh forest fires, but it doesn't give people awareness. They just don't care. It's human's that start the fires, not nature.

Since summer-99.. Japtour, did you spend all your money for japanese manga?

PAUL: Well, we toured Japan with GBN and we had a great time we did 6

shows all over japan and they went really well. The tour was awesome we didn't spend the gig money on manga but on the cost of living which is high, food and transport is expensive. We were nervous because we were playing with so many great bands that we all look up to, like senseless apocalypse and unholy grave. But we settled down and just got on with playing fast and loud, which is what the japanese wanted. We had the best fun and met the best people.

Euro tour, any news?

PAUL: Well, when we got back from the tour we had a letter about a guy who is a promoter, he wants to bring warsore out in september so we are looking at that. I think we will be there in september in 2000, i can be sure of that. I think he wants us to tour with SUPPOSITORY, so i hope all goes well. I really want to see all the people i write to and the great bands that europe has to offer.

Else?

We are doing a cd as well in 2000. Thanx for the interview & support.

NUCLEAR MUTANTS

are a punk band from Cyprus who to be honest I've not heard anything by, as this interview was supplied by Anthony from French zine Riot & Dance, so thanks a lot to him, and as we never hear anything from this Island, I found this interview interesting, I hope you do too....

YOU FORMED THE BAND ONE YEAR AGO - WHICH CHANGES OF MEMBERS DID HAPPEN SINCE THE BEGINNING AND WHY?

The group was formed more than one year ago by members of APOSYNTHESIS and LOST EXISTENCE (R.I.P. both bands). The original members were Charis, Giannis, Kypros and Irene. After that, Irini became pregnant so Eva joined in. Kypros also left in order to join a heavy metal band (he never had it in his blood). We tried a lot of other guys but finally the group ended up in this form: Charis (bass), Irene (guitar & vocals), George (guitar), Giannis (drums) and Eva (vocals)

NOWADAYS, TV AND NEWSPAPERS FOCUS ON CYPRUS BECAUSE EEC WONDERS IF CYPRUS AND TURKEY SHOULD OR NOT ENTER THE COMMUNITY. WHATíS YOUR OPINION ON THE SUBJECT AND ON GENERAL POLITICS OF THE ISLAND? (I MEAN SEPARATION TURKISH/GREEK DOMAINS)

First of all, the European Community for us (the way we understand it) is a huge conspiracy where a group of people want to govern Europe. So fuck European Community. LIVE FREE!!

In the case of Cyrpus, itís just a fight between Turkey and Greece about whoís gonna take the biggest piece from the Ďpieí (island). Fuck them both! Death to all bosses! We want to live free in a united world (by the way they say that we are Greek Cypriots but we are citizens of the world)

WHATíS THE RESULT FOR YOU AS A PUNK BAND BEING GEOGRAPHICALLY ISOLATED? (CONTACTS WITH SCENES AROUND THE WORLD)

We cannot say that we are geographically isolated because if we were you could not read this interview. But of course, things could be much different if we lived in a bigger country like the US. We think that we would have more opportunities to promote our work to more people. We have a lot of contacts around the world especially in England and the US. The internet played a great role in that!

WHERE DO YOUR GIGS FIND PLACES? (UNIVERSITIES, BARS, GIG-ROOMS..) ARE YOU CONFRONTED TO STUPID ASSHOLES (SEXIST OR RACIST, VIOLENT FOLKS) ?

To find a place for concerts in Cyprus is very difficult. The main reason is that punks in Cyprus are very few in number, so nobody permits us to play in their pubs or gig-rooms. Fuck them! What we do is to rent a hall or play in some friendís basement. Because our beliefs are against the beliefs of the majority of Greek Cypriots (the government is continually feeding a hatred against the Turks) we have a lot of assaults by racists and people who belong to the right wing parties.

WHICH BANDS DO YOU APPRECIATE MOST? DO YOU KNOW ANY FRENCH BANDS? (EXCEPT THE TAPES)

We appreciate all the bands that still have their minds active, they are sincere, and have never signed up in a multinational corporation. The only French band we are familiar with (and this is before you sent us the tapes) is ANOMIE, who are fucking great!

CAN YOU FIND PUNK MATERIALS (TAPES, ZINES....) IN CYPRUS AND WHERE FROM?

In Cyprus, it is very difficult to find punk material, that is if you are new on the scene. For us is very easy to find this material because we already have our contacts and there is always the internet.

DO YOU KNOW ANY ALTERNATIVE PLACES IN NICOSIA? (ANARCHIST, ECOLOGIST, ANTI-FASCIST COLLECTIVES)

No, there are no alternative places in Nicosia now. Five-six years ago there was a place (Underground Rockclub) where you could listen to all kinds of rock music. It was not the kind of alternative place we have in mind. Two years ago Charis, George and some other guys rented a place in order to transform it into a anarcho-punk-hardcore kind of pub but this effort has failed because of lack of money. Now, there is an Ďorganisationí in Nicosia called Nicosia Anarchists who they donít have a place to meet but they are well organised.

AS FOR THE GIGS, IS IT DIFFICULT TO FIND A PLACE FOR REHEARSAL AND A STUDIO TO RECORD YOUR SONGS?

It is difficult to find a place for rehearsals because we donít have money to rent a place and also for the reason that we play loudly and the neighbours donít like punk rock at all, they always kick us out. As for the studios you can understand from this: £360 per month is considered to be a good salary for Cyrpus. Studios may even ask £300 per song.

WHO WRITES THE LYRICS INSIDE THE BAND AND WHAT ARE THEY INSPIRED BY?

Lyrics are mostly written by Charis, Giannis and Irini and are easily inspired by the shitty world we live in.

IS IT IMPORTANT TO SING IN ENGLISH OR DO YOU INTEND TO WRITE SOME SONGS IN NATIVE LANGUAGE? (GREEK OR TURKISH? SORRY, I DONíT KNOW....)

We think that the language used is not so important. What is important is the message you want to express from the songs. The reason we decided to express ourselves in the english language is because we donít want to limit ourselves only to the Greek audience but to expand in other countries as well and for that cause English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world.

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE FOLLOWING BANDS? HEYOKA, DEAD KENNEDYS, NECROSIS, SPICE GIRLS.

HEYOKA: fucking great! What else can we say?

DEAD KENNEDYS: great music, great lyrics, although they sold themselves out (or their company, who knows?)

NECROSIS: We know the Turkish group: "Together United Weíll Win"

SPICE GIRLS: Pieces of meat ready to get fucked out. HA HA HA! Ask something serious, man!

ARE YOU AT SCHOOL OR DO YOU HAVE OTHER ACTIVITIES IN DAILY LIFE? WHAT DOES COME IN YOUR MIND IF I SAY CLASS WAR?

Irini and Charis are now at college trying to become psychoogists (know your enemies before you fight back). George is working as a carpenter and Giannis is working as a computer engineer. Charis also likes motorcross and kick-boxing a lot. Irini likes to play the guitar also. George also likes motorcross and Giannis likes a Russian girl called Catrine (HA HA HA!)

Class War - if you mean it as it is described in Marxís theories it will not exist in an anarchist society as we dream it, for the simplest reason that classes would not exist. Cooperation is the base of all.

IS IRENEíS BABY HEALTHY? WHATíS HER/HIS NAME?

Irene and Charisís baby (the name is Leda) is very healthy and an excellent disaster. She breaks everything that stands in her way. She likes punk/hardcore very much and she has created a new dance which will be very popular in 16 years from now. Now sheís 14 months old.

NOW I LET YOU THE LAST WORDS (PROJECTS...)

Now, we are preparing new material in order to release a compete album in the next few months. We have already had some proposals from some underground record companies but we are not sure about anything. DIY is out of question for now because as we explained above money always avoids us.

Stay on your beliefs, united we will one day create the world we all dream of. ANARCHY.

TROTTEL (interview by Dariusz Gadek)

Since "The Final Salut..?" CD your music has evolved a lot. Do you still consider Trottel to be a punk band as you used to do in the past?

I think we have the punk spirit until we do things ourselves, we do an uncompromising music in the way we want to do it and we play at not commercial places. Trottel"s musical style is certainly not what you call punk stereotype these days but I believe the spirit is what the most important.

Is animal rights important to the band? Are you involved in the Animal Defence League? Is any of the band vegan/vegetarian?

We donít have the same opinion about things. The band is composed by individuals who are different from each other and see things differently even if in big lines we believe in the same things. The number of vegetarians varies in the band, now 2 from 4 are vegetarians but nobody is involved in Animal Rights stuff. I personally think that people who are involved do an important job because it is really horrible what humans do to animals.

Youíve been putting on gigs/tours fairly regular for a few years now. Do you ever get fed up of doing them?

Man, it is not few years, Trottel only stopped for very short time in 11 years since we started touring. I rarely get fed up with playing, it is my passion since I was 14 so it is like a drug, my body is used to it and canít live without it. I think it is like that for most people who join our band. Those who not, they leave very quickly.

You wrote "money rules the world", thatís true, so to speak. After all people feel embarrassed by talking about money and all that stuff. What can be the reason of it then?

Money is embarrassing thing it is a need, unfortunately, you got to pay for everything you got to work for it so you donít starve to death or you donít end up homeless on the street life for most people turns around money. If you have it thatís why, if you donít thatís why, it totally influences your life whatever you do and makes you sometimes paranoid too. The solution could only be to live without moneyÖ..but not in a money orientated society but in a different oneÖ

Trottel has gained recognition in hardcore circles as the band as been going on for about 15 years. Has it had any impact on how many records you sell out these days?

More the music becomes difficult, less you sell, we definitely sell less since our music got less classifiable.

Finally any last comments? Anything you want to add?

We like to play in Poland, and hope to see you soon. Thank you for the interview.

DYSTOPIA

SO HOWíS THINGS WITH DYSTOPIA? WHAT YOU BEEN UP TO LATELY?

Mainly just trying to keep the band together, and getting more serious about writing more music, itís tough at times cause we live like 400 some miles apart and weíve currently got less time and money than ever, and getting ready for our third European tour (Oct Ė Nov 2000)

SO HOWíS THE NEW ALBUM COMING ALONG? WHAT FORMAT WILL IT BE?

Weíve got 3Ĺ new songs, totalling about 30 minutes so far, the songs are long, but not boring. Iím not sure of all the lyrics cause theyíre not done yet but I think one will be about junkies, and one about ignoramus racists. Also weíre doing a cover of an old Carcinogen song (Dinoís previous band) dedicated to their guitarist Scott (R.I.P.). If we manage to bust out the full-length, it will be probably 60 minutes or so on 2xLP or CD

YOU RECENTLY RE-RELEASED A LOT OF YOUR STUFF ON CD, ARE THERE A LOT OF PUNKS THESE DAYS WHO DONíT HAVE TURNTABLES?

We like to have our shit available to everybody some people donít have turntables, some people donít like CDís, soÖ..

WOULD YOU EVER RELEASE CDíS ONLY, OR ARE YOU HOPING TO CONTINUE DOING VINYL TOO? HOW IMPORTANT DO YOU THINK IT IS TO STILL DO VINYL THESE DAYS?

No probably not, we like vinyl. I get some stuff on CD, but if I really like the record, I always try to get it on vinyl also, for the artwork and cause I personally prefer the sound of a vinyl record.

OVER HERE THERE ARE STILL A NUMBER OF PUNX WHO ARE AGAINST CDíS. DO YOU EVER FIND THIS IN THE U.S. TOO? IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU, OR IS IT RELATIVELY UNIMPORTANT COMPARED TO OTHER ISSUES?

Yeah this is true in the US too, but probably to a smaller extent, but oh well you canít please everyone can you?

I KNOW ITíS A LONG TIME AGO NOW, BUT THE TOUR YOU DID IN Ď97 WAS FUCKINí AWESOME! HOW DID IT GO FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW?

We were definitely satisfied overall, not everything was perfect, of course, but nothing ever is. Andre Seig did an excellent job with the tour (booking shows, getting a van, scoring hash, stealing everything out of shops that wasnít bolted down), met tons of new people, saw old friends from our first tour, discovered tons of new bands (Zorn, Infaust, Headache and many more) went all over Eastern Europe, it was totally interesting.

I KNOW YOU HAD A FEW PROBLEMS WITH MONEY AND STUFF, SO I GUESS YOU LOST LOTS OF MONEY DOING THIS TOUR DID YOU? DESPITE THIS WAS IT STILL WORTH COMING OVER AND IS ENJOYMENT/MEETING NEW FOLKS ETC MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE FINANCIAL ASPECT OF IT?

We probably would have broken even except we got ripped off $1800 in Belgium by some "punks" we gave a ride to, maybe weíll catch up with them this October! Of course when you invest a ton of money into a tour you at least hope to break even, but as far as the í97 tour goes, I lived like a king travelling all over Europe for 2Ĺ months and it only cost me $400 or $500 itís still a pretty good deal I think. Itís always worth it, but I do hope we can all pay for our airplane tickets, rent, weed, van, t-shirts, postage, and almost $1000 I owe my poor mother.

A LOT OF NON-UK BANDS MISS OUT THE UK WHEN TOURING CAUSE THEY SAY IT COSTS TOO MUCH MONEY AND NOT ENOUGH PLACES IN THE UK WILL PUT THEM ON. HOW DID YOU FIND IT? WAS UK BETTER OR WORSE THAN YOU EXPECTED? AND COMPARED TO EUROPE?

Touring in the UK was a bit harder than Europe was, tougher to organise shows, less money, no free beer, but it was still great just to see England, drink the beer, meet penpals, see old friends, drive on the wrong side of the road, etc.

VISITING THE UK AND EUROPE YOU WILL HAVE SEEN VARIOUS LIFESTYLES, PROBABLY A LOT OF DIFFERENCES IN SOME ASPECTS, BUT A LOT OF SIMILARITIES IN OTHER ASPECTS, WHAT WERE YOUR EXPERIENCES OF LIFE COMPARED TO BACK HOME, ANYTHING TO SHARE WITH US OR ANYTHING THAT STRUCK OUT AT YOU? BEST AND WORST PLACES YOU PLAYED?

People seem more unified and together, not just in the "punkscene" but in general also. People eat together, drink together, cook and hang out, people are more solitary in the US, everyone doesnít get together to cook dinner, they just put a frozen lump of something in the microwave and eat it alone in the bedroom. Thereís definitely more education and less ignorance in Europe, less violence, people care about their neighbourhoods more, its just a different way of thinking. More tolerant, less narrow-minded. I canít really say what the best and worst places to play are cause everywhere was interesting and fun, itís just good to be out of shithole California and away from the 3rd world superpower called "America".

YOUíRE A PRETTY GLOOMY LOT ARENíT YOU - LYRICALLY AND MUSICALLY! HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR SPIRITS UP AND KEEP ACTIVE WITH THE BAND, SCENE ETC WHEN YOUíRE SURROUNDED BY THE SHIT THAT HAPPENS IN THE WORLD?

Smetimes the band is the only outlet we have even though the band also generates a good amount of frustration for us as well, basically the band started and developed the way it did because we were all pretty fucked up in the head. Iím to the point where Iím not even bitter anymore Iím just numb like thereís a big thick callous around my soul. I try to make a difference but at the same time I really couldnít care less about most of the shit brains that surround me, itís fun to watch them dig their own graves. Fuck the human race.

HOW DO YOU GET THE BALANCE RIGHT BETWEEN HAVING SOME FUN AND BEING SERIOUS/CONCERNED ETC? DO YOU HAVE TIMES WHEN YOUíRE SERIOUS AND FUCKED OFF ABOUT THINGS, FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE ANY FUN AND PEOPLE AROUND YOU ARE CONSTANTLY TELLING YOU THAT YOUíRE A MISERABLE FUCKER ETC!?

Of course, yes. People even tell me/ask me why Iím always so negative, when Iím in a perfectly OK mood, Iím sick of it. Yeah thereís times that I know I should be happy, and satisfied with my life, but sometimes Iím just not. Iíve learned to have a lot more fun in the last couple of years, though I find more humour in peoples ignorance now instead of just being angry all the time. And Iím more spontaneous, I know that Iíll never really have a life, so I donít worry so much anymore as long as I can keep a roof over my head.

ONE OF YOUR SONGS IS CALLED ĎBACKSTABBERí WHICH SPEAKS FOR ITSELF. I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT SO-CALLED FRIENDS STABBING YOU IN THE BACK OR CRITICISING YOUR LIFE OR ACTIONS, IS THIS WRITTEN FROM A LOT OF PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND DO YOU HAVE ANY FRIENDS!? ARE THERE ANY FRIENDS THAT HAVE NEVER BACKSTABBED YOU? DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE TO PUT UP WITH A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF SHIT FROM PEOPLE BECAUSE OTHERWISE THEREíD BE NO-ONE LEFT?

Backstabber was written by our drummer, but I know everyone in the band can relate to it quite well. Iíve got a few OK friends but thereís only 3 or 4 people who would go at all out of their way for me unless thereís something for them in the deal, Iíve normally been fucked over and shit on by every person Iíve given half a chance to. Iíve only got 2 friends left from high school and one doesnít go up for parole until 2014. Generally if someone tries to take serious advantage of me they cease to be a part of my life, Iím pretty sick of people really, Iíd rather be a loner than surround myself with a bunch of scumbags?

WORK CROPS UP A LOT IN YOUR SONGS. DO YOU ANY OF YOU WORK REGULAR JOBS? OR PART-TIME/SEASONAL WORK? ANY OF YOU REFUSE TO WORK AND NEVER DO?

Mauz can get pretty decent jobs cause he knows printing, Dino bounces from one shit job to the next, while I am chronically unemployable. Me and Mauz do record labels (Misanthropic and Life Is Abuse) and I am forced sometimes into the world of questionable legalities, which I canít talk about. I make pretty much shit from the label although it helps out a bit sometimes, Iím about to look for a shit job cause the cost of living in Cal has been going way up, and cause I want to keep doing my label and eating, living indoors etc.

Weíre also fucked cause thereís no dole in America, all you can get is $120 of food stamps every month. No socialised medicine and itís not easy to find a job with medical benefits thereís lots of poverty homelessness and crime shits not easy here if you donít want a job.

DO YOU THINK YOUíLL EVER LIVE OFF THE BAND? WOULD YOU WANT TO? OR IT THAT SOMETHING YOUíD REFUSE TO DO? DO YOU THINK THEREíS ANY BANDS THAT LIVE OFF IT AND STILL HAVE A COOL ATTITUDE, STILL INVOLVES IN D.I.Y. AND POLITICAL ACTIVITIES?

Sure, that would be great as long as we remain respectable, underground (mostly), DIY and not rip anyone off or overcharge people for shows, records etc, for me "selling out" reflects not how much you make, but how you go about making it. If a few million people wanted to buy our new record I probably wouldnít argue with them, and my prices and way of doing business would remain the same.

MUCH HAPPENING IN YOUR AREA? HOWíS THE LOCAL DIY SCENE AND ARE THERE SOME POLITICALLY ACTIVE PEOPLE?

Thereís only one real DIY club in the LA area itís called the PCH club, in lovely Wilmington, CA, also home to miles of oil refineries and LA harbour. Thereís a couple more "mainstream" clubs and bars that are run by pretty cool people who support what weíre doing, donít rip off bands, and have polite security. Thereís also lots of total shit places (the showcase, or anywhere in Hollywood) thereís some labels and lots and lots of cool record shops, at least a dozen. Thereís also a really cool worker-owned vegetarian mexican cafť close to downtown called Cafť Luna Sol, but not much else really. Thereís a few politically active people but not many. Most of my friends are conscious of the way things are but its more personal choices and not standing on the corner with a protest sign.

I DONíT KNOW YOUR AREA, SO WHATíS IT LIKE? BIG CITIES, SMALL TOWNS, MIDDLE OF NOWHERE ETC ETC?

The whole LA/Orange County area is over 10,000,000 people, LA itself is 3,600,000 something, with probably close to 100 other cities attached to it mostly 50 to 100,000 people each, itís possible to drive maybe 80-100 miles on city streets with nothing but neighbourhoods, concrete, buildings etc itís really disgusting. Plus the public transport sucks ass. Iíd have to drive at least Ĺ hour or 45 minutes to get to a cool desolate spot to go hiking or something.

GOING BACK TO YOUR LYRICS, A COUPLE TOUCH ON THE STATE CONTROLLING US THROUGH ALCOHOL AND DRUGS.... DOES THIS MEAN YOU HAVE OR ENCOURAGE A DRUG FREE LIFESTYLE? I KNOW FROM YOUR LAST TOUR THAT YOU SUCCUMB TO THESE ĎCONTROLSí TOO! IS IT A QUESTION OF NOT BEING ABLE TO SURVIVE WITHOUT DRUGS OR ALCOHOL, OR ARE YOU IN CONTROL? DOES THIS AFFECT YOUR ABILITY TO BE ACTIVE, FOCUSED ETC? ISNíT YOUR CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUGS A SIGN THAT YOUíRE CONTROLLED TOO BY WHAT THE STATE WANTS YOU TO DO/CONSUME? (I HOPE I DONíT SOUND LIKE A STRAIGHTEDGER HERE CAUSE IíM NOT...!)

Even though none of us live a drug free life, weíre against hard drugs and I for sure respect people who choose not to poison their bodies as long as they donít judge others for their choices. We all enjoy pot and alcohol. Of course you canít do as much with your life if youíre drunk and stoned all day long but itís a question of self-control and moderation, if your drug/alcohol abuse holds you back from doing the things you want to do, then itís time to take a long hard look at your lifestyle.

WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR DYSTOPIA NOW?

Repressing as much of our out of print shit as possible, writing new music and recording at least 4 songs after the Europe tour, hopefully get our full-length out, and personally Iíd like to tour Mexico, South America, Asia if we have the finances for it, I want to play places weíve never been, places bands donít regularly go on tour. Just try to get along together, cause weíre like family in some of the best and worst ways, and record music and travel.

FINAL COMMENTS?

Just the usual spoke pot, eat vegetables and be nice to people until they deserve otherwise. If youíre looking for Dystopia releases or want to get in contact, you can write:

TODD/DYSTOPIA/MISANTHROPIC RECORDS / P O BOX 3725 / HUNTINGTON BEACH / CA 92605 / U$A. Thanx Steve, for the interview, and thanx to anyone reading it.

MIDDLE CLASS, WORKING CLASS IT'S ALL THE FUCKING SAME!

So once again the old prejudice rears its ugly head. CLASS. Here we are in the 21st Century and we're still banging on about working class pride and 'Class War' being the only important part of the so-called anarchist movement. I'll never understand why it's such a crime to be middle class, but that's maybe because some people would say I'm middle class.

I live in a posh town full of footballers and soap stars, not a place you'd expect to find a punk. You can't help where you're born or into what so called class. I live in a 'nice' house in leafy suburbia, a long way from the typical working class inner city. But my job is working class, I work for my local council as a binman. So although my house screams middle class my job doesn't. So can I be classified? Only by those who want to create barriers between people. I always thought anarchy was about breaking down barriers, not creating them. People create differences solely to further their political ideals, everyone needs an enemy to blame things on, just look at history for proof of that.

Then the old chestnut of working class pride in what their fore fathers did comes out. My Grandad spent 4 years in the trenches during World War 1. Am I supposed to be proud of that, as his fellow working class were butchered on the killing fields of Europe. Yeah, I know it's the ruling class who send them off to war, but doesn't the working class go so willingly to slaughter each other.

I don't want to totally slag off 'Class War' as all anarchists need to unite and their part in the struggle could be as valid as any. I even support some of their ideals, but doesn't the anarchist movement need to unite not fight amongst itself. The Spanish Civil War showed what happens when radicals fight among themselves.

Maybe the anarchist movement has got its head up its arse, but what will starting a class war achieve? More fighting and more divisions between people. Isn't that what anarchy is supposed to stop? Am I just a liberal hippy pacifist preaching "Reject and Refuse", maybe I am, but things will never change until people learn to communicate with each other. Aren't all dreams of utopia naive, even a working class one whilst we continue to fight amongst each other.

There is no them and us only me and you.

IAN 'IN DARKNESS, THERE IS NO CHOICE' ZINE.

Workers Are Working Class You Fool.

Just so Class War and their ilk cannot dismiss this as the work of the "middle class", Iím working class, I have a low paid McJob in a shop, my father is working class(he drives a digger), my fathers father was a peasant, as was his father and as were the rest of my ancestors, well at least as far back as the 15th century when they were members of the Gaelic aristocracy (Oops! Thatís done it guess now Iíll be the first up against the wall!) OK. Mark of London Class War talks about smashing the present Anarchist movement (doesnít explain how he intends to do that) and replacing it with a "100% working class movement" and says "we must expel the middle class from our midst" but nowhere does he tell us who or what are the "middle class" (I have a sneaking suspicion that his retort would be Ďworking class people instinctively knowí or Ďif you need to be toldí) we are just told that "middle class" traits include producing theory, being an intellectual, an artist, poet, or juggler?!?! This shit really fucking annoys me, its like Leninís or Charles Murrayís view of the working class. It seems that from the view point of Class War everything most worthwhile , e.g. knowledge, artistic creativity, is the preserve of the "middle class". This is also shown in their view that "keeping things simple" is "populist", the implication being that anything more complicated than tabloid style slogans will be too much for working class people. How these people manage to pass this off as "Working Class Pride" is beyond me, but then I have seen that term advertising a "Right Now" interview with Gary Bushell so wonders will never cease. Sorry but working class people produce art, theory and hell even poetry why shouldnít we?

The other mark of the "middle class" is a university education, I guess that now Iím a useful member of the anarchist movement but after next year if I go to University and come out with a degree, as I hope, I wont be.

Basically this seems to be that old shit of making a division between white collars and professionals on the one hand and blue collars on the other, just like other divisions such as Sexism, Racism and Nationalism this only benefits the maintenance of the Capitalist system. Itís actually impossible objectively to make that division, lets consider the issues, in terms of income, white collar clerical workers, although many of them have greater job security (thank to Trade Union organisation), are often lower paid than even building site labourers, never mind tradesmen, how about status, well the existence of Class War itself shows that one mans status is another mans disapproval, i.e. blue collars look down on white collars as much as the other way around and then there is the other line which claims that some peoples authority, e.g. teachers, D.S.S. staff, puts them in a separate class from the rest of us, must remember that the next time I meet a night club bouncer, or a bus inspector, or a barman calling time, etcÖ(or the next time Iím in Belfast and I meet a soldier - working class according to Class War, when was the last time anyone in the D.S.S. carried out a summary execution!)

Mark goes on to say that "working class people donít want to shock the state we want to smash it", so all the working class people who line up to join the British Army, who sobbed when Diana died, who wear a poppy every November, who have pictures of the Queen on their walls, who bow before the Union Jack, all want to smash the state then do they? Well theyíre keeping that pretty secret arenít they, all closet Class War supporters at heart then, itís a wonder they donít join. Perhaps you could get them to smash the state in the next two hours sometime before I have to go to work.

In fact the political views of the smarter half of the British working class (i.e. the ones that donít vote Tory) combine State Socialism with a more outwardly reactionary outlook of nationalism, homophobia, etcÖ(generally speaking obviously). They donít reject anarchism they canít because they donít know about it, we would be doing better discussing how to promote anarchism than wasting time indulging in fantastic conspiracy theories about how the "middle class" is mysteriously holding the revolution back.

Hiya Steve,

Just a few words in answer to that article by Mark in your last issue.

Heís got a few points, I canít see anything wrong with having pride in what you are, whatever that is, as long as you donít think youíre superior for being it.

But the main problem with the rest of the article is in the sentence ĎThey are brought up different to usí. So people are born into their class, and thereís nothing they can do to change it. Same as their race and sex really.

Now try reading the article again but substitute the words middle/working class for the words black/white or men/women. Total bollocks innit? But Ďtheyíre brought up different to usí! The last people who got to act on your shit was Pol Pot & The Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. Killing millions of people for the crime of being educated. Cool, eh?!

The fact that a revolution in Britain today is as far off as the stars is simply because our country is fucking rich, and weíve ALL got too much to lose, the NHS, welfare state, running water etc. Revolutions happen where people are starving to death, where itís worth the risk.

So if you wanna make the world a better place, give up your fascistic ideas of class purity and scapegoats, and either fuck off to some hellhole to fight and probably die in your glorious revolution or get off your arse and create some real alternatives to their system in your own community.

Cheers, Rob.
